"The celebration of workers of whole world"
The day to celebrate members of the working classes was chosen in 1889 by the Marxist International Socialist Congress. The date May 1 was significant in that it commemorated the Haymarket riot -- the aftermath of bombing at a labour strike in Chicago in 1886.
The origin of Labour Day can be traced back to the United States of America in the 19th Century. May 1 in particular was chosen as the date to mark Labour Day to commemorate the nationwide strike for an eight-hour day in 1886 that began on May 1 and ended as the Haymarket affair in Chicago US.
Union leader Peter J. McGuire is generally given credit for the idea of Labor Day in the United States, but it was likely another leader, Matthew Maguire, who suggested to the Central Labor Union of New York a celebration honouring workers. This resulted in a parade of some 10,000 workers on September 5, 1882.
