Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of the god Shiva. The name also refers to the night when Lord Shiva performs the heavenly dance called Thandava. In every month of the luni-solar Hindu calendar, there is a Shivaratri – "night of Shiva" – on the day before new moon.
On this day, devotees of Lord Shiva observe a full day fast and perform special pujas in temples. People also offer milk to the Shivaling and pray for moksha. Drik Panchang says that on Shivratri day, after finishing morning rituals, devotees should take Sankalp to observe a full day fast and have food the next day.
